October 2024:
Bat Survey
This week we had our annual Bat Survey carried out on our bat boxes at the Field. Undertaken in partnership and checks done under licence, Steve from the Blackwater valley Countryside Partnership and Surrey Heath Tree Wardens Representative Bernard came to record, measure and check orientation our bat boxes. This data is collated across Surrey to help identify suitable bat box locations.
It was a fascinating visit, we discovered birds nests tucked away in bat boxes, and many many slugs. We found evidence of bats in a few boxes, and to our absolute delight found one box with 5 bats in! The species found were Soprano Pipistrelles or Pipistrellus pygmaeus.
It is mating season for the bats, so most likely we had 1 male with 4 females. Bats mate now but don't fertilise the eggs until after they have been through hibernation and will only do so if healthy upon wake up.
We have different types of bat boxes on the field - the one shown in the pictures is a 1FF. It has a sloped door to allow for a smaller and larger opening. Whilst the boxes are bat boxes, small birds can also roost in there at night.
Why do we have Bat Boxes? Natural habitat would be decaying trees (still standing) with natural holes in. at a safe high up level. As the countryside is also used by humans, decaying trees are often cut down for safety reasons. This means that we need to support the bat populations by offering suitable additional homes! Interestingly we have Kent boxes but our Surrey bats don't seem to be so keen.
Bats are protected by UK legislation https://www.bats.org.uk/advice/bats-and-the-law. Please respect the bats by keeping your distance. If you find a bat box has fallen down please report it to the Field of Remembrance.

October 2023:
Christmas Tree finds a permanent home
If you've been to the Community Hub lately, you've undoubtedly noticed that our Christmas tree, generously donated by Conrad and Helga Stuart, has been securely planted in its permanent location. We've carefully chosen this spot to ensure convenient access to electricity for the Christmas tree lights and to provide a comfortable setting for the upcoming Christmas tree lighting event on December 9th.
This thoughtfully selected location also means that attendees won't have to stand on potentially wet and soggy ground. Instead, you can gather in the car park, ensuring a dry and enjoyable experience for all during this festive occasion. We can't wait to see you there on the 9th December for the Christmas Lights Switch on.
October 2023:
Woodland Update
As part of our commitment to maintaining the safety of WFoR, a second Tree Health and Safety report was recently commissioned by our Trustees in August. This report entails a visual inspection of our trees conducted by a specialist to assess potential risks to people and buildings. It provides recommendations for tree management, best practices, advice, and suggests a reinspection timeline.
The report put forth several recommendations, including the removal of deadwood around paths, the felling of a decaying Beech tree, and the investigation of five other trees using sonic tomography. Sonic tomography involves the use of sound waves to detect decay in trees, providing a detailed internal structure image that aids arborists in advanced tree risk assessments.
After these investigations, we'll be soliciting proposals from tree surgeons to carry out the necessary immediate and follow-up work. We express our gratitude to Cllr McGrath for contributing £500 towards the survey and to Cllr Tear for their generous £1000 donation for sonic tomography. We are actively seeking funding for the subsequent work required.
While the removal of mature trees, many tens of years old, particularly when to the lay person look healthy and beautiful is often a sad event. However, we have implemented a program with the assistance of tree wardens and volunteers to plant indigenous trees like oaks and beech while addressing invasive species such as laurel.
We are committed to regenerating our woodland habitat to ensure multi-level canopy cover and maintaining the long-term health and sustainability of our tree population.

Big Help Out at the Field of Remembrance
Thank you to everyone who turned out to help at our Big Help Out event on Sunday 2nd July 2023 (rescheduled from the very wet 9th May!) The playground got a much needed weeding and clean up and looks a lot better for it!
Our thanks also go to St Johns Church team for coordinating the volunteer sign ups. This successful event at the play area will be repeated regularly and we hope to expand our Big Help Out days to include other areas of the village.
The Big Help Out is a national initiative launched by King Charles III to encourage people to volunteer in their community. Do visit the website for more information thebighelpout.org.uk.

Windlesham Village Fete
What a lot of work for some, yet a great day out for so very many. The Windlesham Fete was a tremendous success, despite the unpredictable weather in June. It provided a day of enjoyment for countless locals, who relished the entertainment, stalls, food, and drinks.
For all the hard work and dedication put into organizing the fete, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Helen Lloyd Bisley and her team. Additionally, they managed to raise an impressive £3,200 for WFoR Funds.
On a day like this, many hands make light work. If you have a few hours to spare on Saturday, June 8th 2024, Helen would be thrilled to have your assistance with setting up and closing down. Please contact her at [email protected] if you are available. For more information and pictures, visit windleshamfete.com.

June 2023:
We've BIN having a few problems but are making some changes!
To our Windlesham community and supporters of the field
In future our general and waste bins will be concentrated at the entry and exit points of the Field of Remembrance and in off peak times, not all our bins will be operational. Summer holidays will continue to have extra collections.
This change is necessary as users of the Field of Remembrance have experienced overflowing bins at the FoR on and off over the past months, this past week being no exception. We’ve been experiencing difficulties with contractors deployed by SHBC and are not alone in this issue - bin collections have been hit in other villages too. (Hence the new signage by SHBC on our bins to report overflowing bins).
As you know the FoR is not council owned but held in a charitable trust run by volunteer Trustees and a management committee. Earlier this year we were informed that the cost of the council arranging our bins collection would increase from £2,000 a year to £7,600 a year so we decided to negotiate our own separate waste contract.
From July 14, Shorts Group will take over regular waste collection which we hope will result in a more reliable service at a lower price to the charity (£4,117). However, the compromise we’ve had to reach is that we will need to concentrate both general and dog waste bins at the entry and exit points of the FoR.
The newly elected Village Committee of Windlesham Parish Council has agreed to fund a significant portion of that cost, recognising that the FoR is such a valuable and central community asset.
We ask for the following help from our users:
If you are regular user of the field, please consider becoming a Friend of the Field. Your support will enable us to continue to keep the field and woodland in the condition we’ve been accustomed. https://www.windleshamfor.com/friends.html

The Pram Race is back!
It was great to see the return of the annual Boxing Day Pram Race which for the first time ended at the Community Hub on the Windlesham Field of Remembrance. Whilst the format, route and timings had changed somewhat the runners, walkers and spectators had a great time. As a family centred activity no doubt it will grow in size and stature to continue this traditional event which has been run for over 50 years, raising invaluable funds for local charities.
For more information, and photos, you may wish to read the more detailed article, written by Mike Sheard in February’s Windlesham magazine or visit the website at www.pramrace.com. No doubt such an event would not be successful without the contributions of the Pram Race Committee, volunteer marshals and sponsors.
Of particular note are the new trophies for winning teams, some of which were recrafted by the engineers of the Gordon Murray Group. They will shortly be displayed in the Hub, where all will be able to see the superb craftsmanship.

Rainbow Corner - OFSTED Inspection OUTSTANDING - Congratulations!
Like all schools, nurseries are inspected by the Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED). Just before Christmas Rainbow Corner Nursery were given half a days’ notice of an Inspector’s visit.
Following an Ofsted Inspection, the institution is given one of four grades: 1 Outstanding, 2 Good, 3 Requires Improvement, 4 Inadequate.
We are delighted that Rainbow Corner was found to be Outstanding. Meeting a judgement of Outstanding is exceptionally difficult to get – there must be only one weakness/perceived need for improvement for judgement to be relegated to ‘Good’. If you would like to read the very complimentary report it can be found at https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/16/2581098
Our sincere congratulations to Lucy and all the staff of Rainbow Corner

Carols on the Field - Tues 20th December 2022
Another emerging tradition is to have Christmas Carols on the Field, although being so wet this year it was moved successfully to the car park. On an early winters’ evening St John’s Church Choir led the community singing of traditional carols at the Community Hub. This was the second year that this event was organised, and the earlier start may have limited the size of the congregation.
Our thanks to St Johns Curate Sean Beagley, and Robin Lewis for organising the event which was appreciated by all who were able to come. Looking forward to seeing you in December 20231

Windlesham Christmas Tree Lighting - Sat 3rd December 2022
It was great to see the annual lighting of the Windlesham Christmas Tree(s), both at the Village Green and also a new Event at the Field of Remembrance.
A slightly different approach to the Tree Lighting this year, due to safety reasons, the annual Village Event moved from the location of the Village Green to the Field of Remembrance and ownership handed from the Windlesham Society to the Field of Remembrance. The Christmas tree was very kindly donated to the Field by Conrad and Helga Sturt. In the near future the tree will be moved to a permanent site on the Field - so that it may be enjoyed by all for many years to come.
The event was made extra special this year, with Sir Dr Brian May, Anne Brummer (Harper Asprey Wildlife Rescue) and the lovely hedgehog Grace, switching on the Christmas Tree lights at the Field of Remembrance.
Live music, Christmas Market Stalls, Carol Singing and refreshments were enjoyed by all.
Our particular thanks to Pat Lewis, with her helpers, who organised this event which will no doubt become an annual tradition.

Road Closure notification for planned tree work on Kennel Lane - 6 Sep 2021
Our wonderful Admiral’s Field woodland and the trees around our boundary require regular work by tree surgeons, frequent maintenance, and careful replanting. We have many mature trees, but severe weather, cavities and decay damage can mean we need to either reduce the size of trees or in some cases remove them for public health and safety reasons.
We have recently had a professional tree survey that identified several trees need work by our tree surgeons including ten larger trees. Some of these will be reduced in size or have deadwood removed but in the case of two Beech and two Scots Pine we need to fell the trees as a result of decay or damage. These include trees that overhang Kennel Lane and we have received permission from Surrey CC Highways to close the road between 6 and 10 September 2021 covering the working hours 0930 – 1600, so that the work can be completed safely. We apologise for any inconvenience this road closure may cause.
We now have regular work parties which together with the volunteers from Surrey Heath Tree Wardens are making excellent progress maintaining the woodland by clearing invasive species like laurel that are crowding out saplings of the native trees which we need to nurture. If you can help with this work, please contact Helen Hansen-Hjul.
During the last 3 years we have sadly lost a large number of mature trees in the woodland area. However, having a clearer canopy gives us an opportunity to regenerate the woods by bringing light that will allow young saplings to thrive. We are working on plans to regenerate the area by replacing the stock with native species like oak, beech, holly, blackthorn and hawthorn and we hope to plant larger saplings this autumn.

Woodland maintenance update - 2 January 2021
We are now holding regularly work party sessions in our woodland area on the first Tuesday of the month between 10:00-13:00 hrs with much valued advice and support from the Surrey Heath Tree wardens.
As these sessions are held on behalf of a Registered Charity and the fact that we are all Volunteers, working outside, for the good of the Community, this means we are able to carry on under the current Tier Four COVID Regulations. If these change we will, of course, amend/cease activities accordingly.
A 5 metre rule is enforced, tools are disinfected and we ask there be no swopping of tools, volunteers equip themselves with suitable protective footwear and gloves.
This is an opportunity to help our environment and our Community, be in fresh air, surrounded by nature, getting valuable exercise.

Field of Remembrance celebrates as we win Green Flag Award Again
Record-breaking year as more than 2,000 green spaces across the country get international quality mark
On Wed 14th October, parks and green spaces across the country raised their Green Flag Award with pride in a year when millions of people have seen the value of having great quality green spaces on their doorstep.
Among them was our very own Field of Remembrance which has retained its Green Flag Award.
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for their management across the United Kingdom and around the world.
The Field of Remembrance is one of more than 2,000 sites across the country to collect the award for 2020.
Commenting on the Field of Remembrance' success, Keep Britain Tidy Chief Executive Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “This year, more than ever, our parks and green spaces have been a lifeline and we know that millions of people have used them to relax, meet friends, exercise or simply escape for a short time.
“It is testament to the incredible dedication and hard work of parks staff and volunteers that, despite the challenges that went along with record numbers of visitors, the Field of Remembrance has achieved the highest international standards demanded by the Green Flag Award.”
